I'm with Trump: Sadiq Khan is a stone cold loser

What has Sadiq Khan actually done for London? I’ve been wondering about this since Donald Trump called him a “stone cold loser” on Twitter, inviting angry replies from right-on commentators. Journalist Paul Mason wrote back “we’re proud of our Mayor”, receiving thousands of Likes. MP David Lammy tweeted that Trump had an issue with Khan being “London’s first ever Muslim mayor”.

But let’s be honest: it’s not about Khan’s identity or anything else. He’s a rubbish mayor, and deserved to be lambasted.

The hopelessness of Khan’s tenure is reflected in the amount of time he spends protesting. It has become a substitute for action – and sometimes thought. His decisions – or indecisions – have resulted in huge expenses for our country. The recent Extinction Rebellion, for instance, cost the Met Police an extra £7.5m, and reportedly cost London’s West End more than £12m. Yet Khan let the green activists continue for ten days, at one point saying they were “allies”. It seems never to have occurred to him that it’s possible to put pressure on the government, in regards to climate change, without ruining the working lives of ordinary people.

At other times, Khan acts as if he’s a Guardian columnist who has taken over the London Assembly. One of his most PC, but pointless, policies was in when he campaigned to end “body shaming” adverts on the tube after a bikini model was picture with the slogan “Are you beach body ready?”. As a Londoner who sometimes eats chips on the Northern Line at 2am, I can’t say the sight of these adverts made my day. But who cares? These issues are so much less important than knife crime, which seems to be much further down the agenda for Khan than swimwear.

Stabbings in the city have risen to the highest level since records began in 1946. It should be said that knife crime is no easy challenge for any leader to solve, but it’s Khan’s absolute defeatism that’s so disappointing. Endlessly he blames cuts, without ever thinking of more lateral solutions to the problem. He has never sent out a message to young men in the city. Can you imagine him on TV, telling them: “Please, let’s put down the knives.” Is it so wild to expect a leader to do this? Aren’t they meant to inspire people, after all?

All Khan seems to care about is soundbites and looking good. He’s like the Trump balloon: full of hot air. The list of his failures is so huge it could not possibly make one article, but on a personal level I feel exasperated at the decline of London. Over the weekend I came back from holiday in Morocco and found a man and woman having a physical fight in public; no one intervened. Not knowing what to do, I stared at the bloke, who told me to “f**k off”. I then returned to my £1,200-per-month flat, which reminded me of another thing the mayor has failed to solve: house prices.

Khan’s latest Twitter spat with Trump is just one more example of his uselessness. He can’t even bring himself to speak directly with the president, instead crying to all his Twitter mates about what a meanie he is. I’m afraid I’m with Trump on this one: Sadiq Khan is a stone cold loser.
